Capping Domination Points

So, I've been thinking about other clan ops we could improve our standings in, and since we've heard rumblings that stuff like 5 riot shields + 1 killer in TDM may be considered boosting, it seems like Domination is the next gametype we can try to work our friendship magic on. Punsy Charlatan, our stickiest pony, regularly comes in 30-50 caps (that's 15-25%) ahead of the next runner up in Sticky Fingers ops, and told me that his tactic is smoke grenade/trophy system, lie down, cap, repeat. This could obviously be improved with pairs of cappers sticking close to each other; one drops the smoke, the other drops the trophy. We might be able to get some more smoke by having someone drop a javelin on the cap site, as well, after the cappers have run out of tactical grenades.

I'll need to test this, but I think points don't cap any faster once three people are on them. I guess this means the optimum group size would be 3 cappers, 3 support? Maybe the cappers drop tac inserts at some neutral point which will make it easier to catch up to the herd if (when) killed and the support guys are tossing smoke/trophy/javelin, as well as playing overwatch and so on? What do you guys think?

Also, Den Kirson's forum is great and I want to lick it. Check out this thread on run speed and domination spawns. Very interesting. Anyway, post your thoughts in the comments!

  1. I think the riot shield thing is only boosting in Lone Wolf ops...but the domination thing here should work. I'd be willing to run support for this!!

  2. Clan ops TDM dos not promote any team work at all. You have to lone wolf it in order to get a lot of kills and minimize time searching for games. In order to do well in the domination op coordination will have to be key. We'll have to know what routes are the best to run and how to push a team out for a well defended flag.

  3. yeah the other key to winning domination ops is getting the map "Dome" as much as possible. It's best to keep queueing with a full lobby until it shows up as an option then let it fill the other team while you all vote for "Dome".

And yeah the riot shield thing is considered boosting in lone wolf operations but for Clan Operations I am not sure since nobody has really tried it yet. My guess is they would probably call it boosting because it changes the metagame and play experience more negatively to have people not going for kills rather than not going for confirms.

  4. Run to nearest/easiest uncapped point -> throw smoke -> lay down (behind a corner if possible) is the basic idea, yup. The part that seems to be tough for most people to wrap their head around is to only shoot if it is *absolutely necessary*. I'll do a full writeup sometime in the next couple days. contributor status plzkthx

I will say that this gametype is definitely not low-hanging fruit--I was lucky enough, on the very first Domination ClOp way back when, to run around for a few games with a 5-person team executing what I believe is the most effective strategy short of honest-to-goodness boosting, so these ideas have been around for a while.

  5. Also, crazy TDM min/maxing idea: the guys playing support all have Recon Pro, Hardline Pro, a pea shooter, a Stinger, and flash grenades. Their goals are to light up enemies for assists and blow up air support, thereby earning support killstreaks without ever getting a single kill themselves.

    1. Watch out guys, I think we have a team player extraordinaire on our hands, honestly that's the single most amazing strategy Iv'e ever heard. With all the Assassins lit up like Christmas trees my killstreaks would come easier than ever thought of...

  6. Punsy has this Domination strategy pretty well worked out. He and I played together last ClOp and he taught me a thing or two. Here are the primary lessons I learned:

    1. You have to die... a lot!
I capped the most points in games I went about 5 and 22. You need to replenish your smoke grenades because they keep you alive for the extra second or two to cap each point and your respawn usually puts you closer to your next cap point.

    2. Shooting enemies slows you down.
In games where I went >1.0 for K/D I capped the fewest points. Enemies often ignore you if you don't shoot at them. They may take pot shots at you, but once you're around a corner and you don't come back, they forget about you. Also, fire fights tend to draw more combatants to your area so there will be more traffic and thicker fire to wade through.

    3. Smoke grenades are awesome.
These are awesome. I loved having enemies try to wade inside to find prone cappers. This is where I got most of my kills. Enemies spraying into the mist almost never hit you. Often enemies will hang back until the smoke clears so they don't get 'naded.

    4. Predict which points the opponents will cap first and sprint there.
Often you will find that your team has two dom points capped: the one you just capped and one other. Don't just run to the uncapped point every time. Go the the closest one you can reasonably capture 10-15 seconds from now.For instance, Say your team has A and you just capped B. They enemy has C. You might think "run to C!" However, in the time it takes to get across the map, B may be lost and you could have it capped a second time. Just because your team holds a point doesn't mean you will keep it very long. Predicting which points to recap greatly reduces transit time.

    1. This guy is a quick learner. It's not a coincidence that RenMan5 came in 2nd or that I broke my own personal record on this last ClOp, and I'm excited to find out how well we can scale this to a team of 3-6.

      Writeup tonight!

  7. I really like the things being thrown around here. I usually like playing Dom so if anyone wants someone to play with, my GT is Rapture Riot.

  8. Now, one thing that we need to keep in mind is that the winning teams usually get over 2000 confirms. Even if we all played like Punsy, that would get us around 1500, so that alone is clearly not enough to win. We should try a few practice games and see how far these ideas can get us.

  9. Good idea man we should try this a couple days before the op to make sure it works

    1. Jojo is right. We need to try a couple different strategies and see what works for us.
